FL Studio - Importing MP3 Files

There isn't an 'Import MP3' option in the File Menu.

However, importing a MP3 file can be done by just dragging it from the Windows Explorer to the Playlist of  FL Studio.

It automatically creates a channel for the imported file. This channel can be routed to an appropriate Mixer Track where additional properties can be configured.

FL Studio - Sliding

Sliding in FL Studio

What is Sliding?

FL Studio give us an option of sliding from one note to another.

To do that, the first note has to created with the desired duration. Then the second note has to be placed within that duration. A sliding will occur as soon as the 'play head' reaches the second note.

Now the sound will stay in the second note. It will stay in that until the duration of the first note. If needed we can add multiple notes in between for more sliding.

FL Studio 12 Tutorial - 11 - Steps per beat in FL Studio

Now let us take a look into this ‘Steps per beat’.

From the previous video, remember our settings. It is still in these. Beat per bar is 4 and Steps per beat is 1.

Now let me play the metronome and record a melody.

I know that each rhythm note is a beat and I have 4 beats per bar.

Let me record the melody. And paste it in the playlist. Then let me make a rhythm for it.

Here, I can play only one rhythm note in beat. This single note fills the entire gap between two beats.

What is I wanted to play more rhythm notes those gaps?

FL Studio allows us to do that by splitting the beat into two or more steps. If I split a beat into 4 steps, then the first step falls on the beat. The next three steps fills in the gap between that beat and the next beat. And it goes like that.

Why do we need that? To make the rhythm interesting. Otherwise the rhythm could get boring.

So, this option ‘Steps per beat’ specifies the number of steps in beat.

FL Studio 12 Tutorial - 10 - What is a bar?

What is a bar?

If you are watching this video and practicing it, now make the changes as I do. Go to Options and ‘Project General Settings’.

You should see, Beats per Bar and Steps per beat. It took a while for me to understand this ‘Steps per beat’. I will explain this in subsequent videos.

However now let us learn by simplifying things. So go and change them to 1.

In the previous video we saw about Beats per minute, which specifies the number of beats that will be in there in a minute.

So let me use the drums and make a note for each beat. How does it sound? Not good, right?

However if I break them in to a smaller chunk which is repeatable? It sounds nice.

Generally the songs follow a repeatable pattern of such chunk. And this chunk is called as a bar.

And the composer specifies the number of beats that will be there in a bar.

FL Studio 12 Stutorial - 09 - Tempo or BPM or Beat per Minute in FL Studio

12th video for the series, FL Studio 12 Tutorial. This video introduces Tempo or BPM or Beat per Minute of a song.

Now we are few steps closer to composing our own song.

Now a song can compose of variety of components such as melody, chords, rhythm, automation etc. But everything depends on a basic underlying component, which is the tempo.

What is it anyway?

Like our heartbeat, every song has its own its own beat.

However it can be faster or slower. A composer determines that.

But how do we put it in writing?

I cannot just say faster..mmm..little slower.

However I can say, my song has 130 beats per minute. What this means is, in a minute, my song will have 130 beats in a minute.
